“我覺得這是一場精彩的音樂會。一位來自中國的女子連續七年舉辦這種音樂會。她有一個目標，就是推廣老上海流行歌曲。每次演出，她都會穿著古典中國旗袍。她將這種中國文化帶到美國，也帶給了世界。讓我們有機會了解“上海風味”在音樂中的意義。我認為這非常重要。她是這一傳統的繼承人。我很佩服她。租用這個劇院並讓舊金山室內管弦樂隊與她合作演出。所有這些都是主流的標誌。非常令人欽佩。

2019年10月12日，梅楣在舊金山灣區Cupertino市，德安扎藝術中心 De Anza Performing Arts Center 舉辦第八場獨唱音樂會《鳳凰于飛》經典名曲和原創音樂會，音樂編曲沿用40’s「上海百代唱片」樂團編制和原譜配器，現場樂隊: Joy Luck Music Chamber Orchestra 喜緣音樂室內交響樂團，由Mr. Matthew DePasquale擔任指揮，其中2首是梅楣的原創音樂：《高貴的難民》The Noble Refugee，《唐詩 · 長相思 二》Everlasting Yearning。音樂會再獲成功。

《梅花》是1957年香港電影《神秘女神》的插曲，原唱是李香蘭小姐，也是當年紅遍上海的“上海七大歌星”中唯一的外國人，李香蘭是一位岀生在中國東北的日本姑娘，受過正式西洋聲樂教育，她用美聲唱法唱流行歌曲，她的聲音高貴華麗，是當年極為觸目的明星。戰後移居日本，曾當選日本國會參議員，她一生為中日友好搭橋鋪路，稱她為日裔中國人比較帖切。

“Plum Blossoms” is the theme song of a 1957 Hong Film “Mysterious Woman”. The original singer was Li Xianglan, who was not Chinese but was still recognized as one of the “Seven Greatest Singers of Shanghai”. She was Japanese but was born in Shangdong Province, China. She received formal western style education in music. She uses opera techniques in singing popular songs. Her voice was brilliant and noble. She was a shining star of her time. After WWII she moved back to Japan, and became a Senator in the Japanese parliament. She spent her whole life building friendship between China and Japan. She was more of a Chinese with a Japanese origin.

這首歌曲，是梅楣小姐的原創音樂，她說：當她拿到這首歌詞的時候，原本計畫是要寫成古香古色的中國風，但在寫歌那天腦海中卻不斷的浮現出昭君出塞的畫面，同時又出現無數華人遠離家園到異國他鄉打拼的形象。而她無論走到新加坡也好，馬來西亞也好，還是在美國，總是看到我們華人真的很能吃苦，很拼。所以她用散板慢拍來敘述和抒情一下，之後很快轉入探戈的節奏來描繪那種喫而不捨，奮鬥拼搏的精神。在歌曲的最後加上“啊”字的華彩音階來表達梅花的美麗和高貴的氣節。這首歌曲歌名叫: 《 梅 》, 由一位現代年輕詩人白馬作詞, 梅楣作曲, Andy Fung編曲、配器。
This is an original song composed by Mei Mei. She said: When she first obtained the lyrics, her plan was to write a kind of ancient Chinese music for it. But on the day when she got down to work on it, what popped into her mind was the scene of Zhao Jun—the most beautiful concubine in history – on her way out of the Gate of the Han Palace to be married off to the prince of the newly conquered southern nation. Mei Mei also thought of the Chinese immigrants who left their home country trying to make it in foreign countries. She opted for a slow ballad followed by Tango tempo to depict the hard-working and perseverant spirit of the overseas Chinese. The song ends in a single canon “Ah …” to bring home the beautiful and noble spirit. The title of this song is “Plum Flowers”. Lyrics was written by a contemporary poet Bai Ma. Music was composed by Mei Mei. And instrumental arrangement is by Andy Fung.

Miss Zhou Xuan was the earliest singer in China to cross over to film-making. In her career as an actor for almost 20 years, she cast in over 40 motion pictures. This song was from a 1946 classic film “The Long Longing” in which she cast the main character and also recorded the theme song. The creators of this song were two giants in China’s music history. One was a “child prodigy” from South China named Fan Yanqiao, and the other was the “Pop King” Mr. Li Jinguang. The instrumental arrangement was done by the director of this concert Mr. Matthew DePasquale.

Miss Bai Guang is one of the “Shanghai’s Seven Greatest Singers”. She was born in Beijing and she studied in the music program of the Tokyo Women’s College. Together with Li Xianglan (another famous singer), she studied with the famous Japanese vocalist Miura Tamaki. Her superb performing artistry and her beautiful vocal abilities won her countless fans and the title of “Legend”. She had a prolific career also as a film producer, director, and screen writer. She was crowned as “the Light of Entertainment” in China. Here we introduce one of her signature songs: the theme song entitled “Tonight is the Night” from a 1948 film “Queen Bee”.

In the 1940’s, Zhou Xuan was the top singer among the “Seven Greatest Singers of Shanghai”. She recorded over 200 songs and was the most prolific singer of all. She was also nicknamed “Golden Tongue”. As a forerunner of the “singing with mic” style, she not only developed the singing method where the singer’s lips would touch the microphone, but also was the first to use her natural speaking voice on stage. Before then, vocal performances always involved big voices. Taking advantage of the microphone, Zhou Xuan produced soft and clear singing voice that was very appealing to the audience. This is the theme song from a 1947 film called “Song of the Singing Girl”. The song title is “Where Can I Find my Soulmate”.

金朝泰和五年，一位年輕學子趕赴科舉考試，途中看見一獵人將一對在天空翱翔的大雁射下一隻，另一隻在空中盤旋哀鳴，當確信伴侶已死，便也頭朝地飛下撞死在伴侶身旁。大雁的殉情对他產生强烈震撼，為能使大雁的美名流芳“千秋萬古”，他從獵人手中把一雙大雁買下，葬在這簫鼓聲聲的橫汾路上，為其墳墓取名“雁丘”，並寫下這首《雁丘詞·問世間情爲何物》，這位作者就是金朝第一才子元好問先生。梅楣為此詞譜曲，Matthew DePasquale 編曲、配器。
The story goes like this: Back in the Jing Dynasty (1115~1234 A.D.), a young scholar was on his way to take the Imperial Examination. He saw a hunter shooting down one of the two wild geese soaring in the sky. The survived goose cried in sorrow and circled the one that had been shot down. After he believed his companion was indeed dead, he crashed down head first and killed himself next to her. The way the goose died for his love greatly touched the scholar. He wanted to make sure the story was heard by generations to come, so he bought the pair of dead geese from the hunter. He found a spot on the route the emperor took to survey his subjects, and buried the geese. He named the grave “Geese Mount”. And he wrote this poem called “Geese Mount Poem—Asking the World What Love is”). This scholar was Sir Yuan Hao, the top scholar of the Jing Dynasty. This song is composed by Mei Mei and arranged by Matthew DePasquele.

《鳳凰于飛》是今晚音樂會的主題歌，同時也是1945年電影《鳳凰于飛》的主題曲，由周璇小姐主演兼主唱。著名作曲家陳歌辛先生作曲，填詞人則是著名詞作家陳蝶衣先生，陳老師一生填詞五千多首，人稱“詞聖”，配器記譜：Yangfan Xu。當年這兩首歌很火，上海的大街里弄，家家戶戶的收音機都在播放。
“Phoenix On Wings” is the theme song for tonight’s concert. It is also the theme song in the 1945 film “Phoenix On Wings”. Miss Zhou Xuan was the main cast of the film and was also the singer of this song. It was written by the famous composer Chen Gexin. The lyric was written by the famous lyricist Chen Dieyi. Mr. Chen wrote over 5,000 lyrics in his lifetime, and was crown “God of Lyrics”. Instrumental arrangement by Yanfan Xu. Back in those years, this song was very popular and was played over and over again in streets, alley ways, and households through radios.

《夜來香》詞曲由著名音樂家黎錦光先生創作，他一生創作超過200首流行歌曲，其中就以《夜來香》最為出名。在1944年一個秋夜，黎錦光為京劇名旦黃桂秋錄音。當年的錄音棚密不透風，沒有空調很悶熱。就在中途休息期間，黎錦光推開窗戶，一陣南風吹來，帶著花香，遠處有夜鶯在啼唱。於是黎錦光靈感一動，內心激蕩的旋律，噴湧而出……就這樣，一首歐美風格，倫巴節奏的《夜來香》誕生了。這首歌曾先後給周璇、龔秋霞、姚莉等好幾位大牌歌星試唱，但都因為音域太寬、不好駕馭，只得作罷。而後某日，李香蘭到百代公司錄歌，無意中在黎錦光的辦公桌上看到了《夜來香》的歌譜。一試唱，頓時欣喜若狂：這正是她多年夢寐以求的歌！從此，《夜來香》成了李香蘭演唱會的必唱和壓軸之歌，這首歌也把她的藝術生涯推到巔峰。
“Night Fragrance” is a song written by the famous musician Li Jingguang. He wrote well over 200 songs in his lifetime and “Night Fragrance” is the best known one. On an autumn night in 1944, Mr. Li was recording for the then famous Beijing Opera singer Huang Guiqiu. Back then recording studios were not equipped with air conditioners, and so it was hot and stuffy inside. While they were on break, Mr. Li opened the windows. A gust of cool wind brought the fragrance of flowers. Far away nightingales were singing in the dark. That gave the inspiration to Mr. Li for this song. He was in the groove. The lyric and the music just poured out. So this European style rumba-tempo beautiful song was born. At first many singers tried to sing it, including Zhou Xuan, Long Qiuxia, and Yao Li. But the range was too wide and it was too hard to make it work. They all gave up. Days after, Li Xianglan came to the recording studio for some other work. She saw the music sheet on Mr. Li’s desk. She gave it a try and much to her own amazement, it was just the kind of song she sought to sing for a long time! Ever since then, “Night Fragrance” became Li Xianglan’s “must performed” song and her signature song in all of her concert. The song also pushed her music career to the peak.

The original singer of this song was Miss Bai Hong, a 1930’s singer, actor, and opera singer. Miss Bai Hong was a descendant of the Manchu emperor. She enjoyed two of the “first” in China’s music history: First popular singer to hold a solo concert, and first singer to win a “People’s Choice” award. The song was written by Mr. Yan Gefan, who was one of the “China Five Music Giants”, the other four being Chen Gexin, Li Jingguang, Yao Min, and Liang Yue. The arrangement of this song is an interesting combination of Jass and Beijing Opera, which at the time was rather wild.

Miss Bai Guang is one of the “Shanghai’s Seven Greatest Singers”. She was born in Beijing and she studied in the music program of the Tokyo Women’s College. Together with Li Xianglan (another famous singer), she studied with the famous Japanese vocalist Miura Tamaki. Her superb performing artistry and her beautiful vocal abilities won her countless fans and the title of “Legend”. She had a prolific career also as a film producer, director, and screen writer. She was crowned as “the Light of Entertainment” in China.

Miss Yaoli, who was one of the “Seven Great Singers of Shanghai” and was dubbed “Silver Tongue”, passed away in her sleep on July 19, 2019. She was 97 years old. Miss Yao contributed greatly to the Chinese music field in her life. “Rose Rose I love you” is one of her signature master piece, which took the third place on the American Music Billboard. She became the first Chinese singer to be recognized by the American Popular Music culture. In this performance, Meimei and six of her top students Shi Yuan, Han Bo, Xu Qiqi, Zhu Shiyan, Chen Zhesheng, and Chang Tianxiang will sing this song in a Capella style. Harmony arrangement was done by former director of the Youth Choir, Mr. Zhou Weijun.
